Keene Square Surface Design and Restructure

The design provided in this discussion is very similar to the current traffic flows.   There are improvements based on some new road configuration and intelligent traffic signals.  New intelligent signals will have a significant impact on traffic flows. The configuration traffic throughput-flow capabilities are supported by the analysis provided in the Traffic section.  There is ample room for traffic growth in this solution versus the single lane limitations shown in the plan currently being proposed on Keene City website.. The measurements are based on real-time actual measurements of traffic flows, not on the queue lengths at each traffic light.

Preserving the Historical Identity and Beauty of Keene Square

The following is a description of the traffic flows proposed in this solution.  The proposed solution in this section relates to motor vehicles.   The Bikes and People section will address those categories and their design options in more detail.

Central Round-About

1. The existing round-about is maintained as the central traffic flow. (no additional round-about required)

2. More intelligent signals will provide improved traffic flows and allow for better management of pedestrian crossings.

3. Multiple traffic lanes around the square, will provide for traffic flows that are not impeded by parking cars, deliveries, transportation stops for buses and handicap transport.  (these problems are innate in the currently proposed solution incorporating single lane configurations)

4. Cross-walk improvements,  Wider cross-walks and better walk/signal timing. (also see section on Bikes-People)

Main Street Corridor

1. Maintain angle parking and number of parking spaces for business.

2. Adding left turn / U-Turn at Gilbo Avenue, removes the U-Turn at the top of Main Street, allowing enhancements for pedestrian crossing of Main Street at the south end of the square. Provides access to the planned future enhancements to the West side zone defined by Gilbo Avenue.  The pedestrian crossing will be wider and at the north end of the Gilbo Ave. - Main Street intersection.
(Removing the turn around traffic at the square eliminates backups caused by turnaround traffic and

enhances the flow from South Main Street into the square).

It is noted here that sidewalks will be redesigned.   This document provides no positions on the sidewalk design, other than if a proposed extension causes a reconfiguration of traffic lanes or parking.
